Genre: Diary entry

August 3rd, 1937

President Franklin Roosevelt outlawed the cultivation of hemp yesterday. After 20 years of farming, I’ve been instructed to destroy all my crops, or face legal consequences. Why? No one is sure yet. I don’t know what to do. How will I support my family? One minute, I’m told that I’m required to grow the stuff, and now, after I’ve built my life around this farm, I’m told that I can’t? Something is wrong. What will we use to make paper? Fabric? Fuel? I’m at a loss.

And it’s not just me! Thousands of other farmers will lose their farms, homes, and maybe even their families because of this. I don’t see how this is a good thing. I suppose the government knows what’s best, though. Maybe they’ve found a new miracle plant that we can use to make paper, newsprint, cardboard, cooking oils, margarine, bird seed, soap, balms, lotions, clothing, shoes, denim, diapers, canvas, rope, twine, carpet, caulk, oil paints, varnish, printing ink, fuel, solvents, and building materials.

The above is a diary entry I've written in the point of view of a hemp
farmer the day after hemp cultivation is deemed illegal.
